Scholastic BookFlix

Scholastic BookFlix is an online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction from Children’s Press and other trusted Scholastic imprints. This engaging resource for children in grades pre-K through 3 helps early readers develop and practice essential reading skills and introduce them to a world of knowledge and exploration.

Each BookFlix unit includes streaming video of a classic children’s story. With the Read Along option, each word is highlighted as the story is read, with key vocabulary words highlighted in yellow. In addition, each BookFlix title is paired with a related nonfiction text. There are interactive Puzzlers (educational games) which reinforce key vocabulary from the nonfiction text, or that ask readers to differentiate between fact and fiction.

Each BookFlix unit also includes a Meet The Author profile, age-appropriate Web links related to the story, and lesson plans for educators to use BookFlix with beginning readers. A number of titles are also available in Spanish.

TrueFlix

TrueFlix is an online resource that helps students hone literacy skills, build knowledge of subject-area content, and cultivate 21st Century skills through the inquiry process. All of the True Book titles are supported with a deep and diverse reservoir of related content and primary sources featuring videos, audio, images, and text.

Each TrueFlix title includes streaming video to engage the student and introduce the topic. The accompanying True Book has page-turning and read-along features, chapter tabs, and vocabulary terms identified and defined. Each title has an index of related content that provides opportunities for further research and reading including fiction, primary-source documents, and related articles from Grolier Online.

Each TrueFlix title is supported with lesson plans for educators, project ideas for beginning researchers, and an Activity Center with interactive quizzes and vocabulary tests.

FreedomFlix

FreedomFlix is an online resource that transforms content from the highly successful Cornerstones of Freedom series into enhanced eBooks. All the eBooks are supported with a deep and diverse reservoir of related content and primary sources featuring videos, audio, images, and text. FreedomFlix helps students hone literacy skills, build knowledge of important historical topics, and cultivate 21st Century skills through the inquiry process.

Each FreedomFlix title includes streaming video that engages the student and introduces the topic, an eBook version of the Cornerstones book with key vocabulary terms identified, read-alongs, captions, and strategically placed pop-up features that expand on the text and bring history to life. Each book contains five to nine of these features, which include primary-source video and audio, virtual tours, dramatic readings of letters and firsthand accounts, images, texts, and facsimiles of historical documents.

Each FreedomFlix title is supported with lesson plans for educators, discussion topics, project ideas, and writing prompts that ask students to provide written responses to thoughtful open-ended questions. Four writing prompts are provided for each FreedomFlix unit, assessing comprehension as well as higher-order thinking.
